Notes from a Google AdSense Hangout on Policies

adsense policies

Today I attended a Google+ Hangout run by Google about AdSense policies. There are many people getting banned from AdSense before they even get off the ground. Here's some notes from the hangout to hopefully help you follow the AdSense policies and keep your account active. Here are the most common violations: Adult Content - mostly they mean pornography, but they also included profanity in this section, so be aware. Copyrighted content - if you are publishing full TV shows, movies, eBooks, etc. you could be banned from AdSense. This also extends to the pages that you are linking to. So be careful as to who you are linking to. This practice is also illegal, so if you're doing this, AdSense is the least of your worries. Encouraging clicks - you cannot use words like, "support my site", "visit our sponsors", "click our ads to help me" on your site. You also cannot labels mislabel ads such as "recommendations", "special offers" or "more info". The only two phrases that they allow … [Read more...]

How to Make a Header for Your Blog

Here's a post request that came through Twitter. Maria asked how to create a header for her blog. Creating a header is a tough thing. It's not really something that can be taught or shown in a blog post. I will try and help by offering some tips on headers and explaining how to install a new header on your blog though. Tips on creating a website or blog header: • keep it clean • minimal pictures • make sure it fits • don't make it too tall • make it look professional • don't make it look cheap You want your header to be a good first impression of your blog or website, so make it good. If you're not creative, or are not good with graphic design, hire someone to do it. There are designers throughout blogland who do a great job for $20-$50. Even better, you can check out Fiverr to find hundreds of people who will create you a header for $5! You can see their work and any feedback they have before ordering. Do your research there, find a good one and you'll … [Read more...]

5 Quick Ways to Promote a Blog Post

5 ways to promote a blog post

So you just made a great blog post, huh? And you want people to see that blog post, right? Here are 5 quick ways to promote a blog post. It's the internet equivalent of screaming at the top of your lungs in a crowded mall "I made a new post!" 1. Pinterest Take some nice pictures to go with your post. I'm hoping you do that anyway. Pin that picture to your account and you'll get a click-through from that for every few people who see your pin. 2. Twitter/Facebook Tweet about your post. Don't just Tweet a title and a link, but make it interesting. For example, I will Tweet about this post with something like: "Learn how to get more people to see your blog posts here **LINK**" or "Interested in getting more people to your blog? See how here **LINK**". Also, use hashtags on Twitter to get more people to see your tweets. With Facebook, post a status update with a link to the blog post at least twice on the day that your post goes live. Statistically, if you have a Facebook page set … [Read more...]

What are Rich Pins and Why Should You Care About Them?

Pinterest has made another change. This one is to their Pins, specifically. According to their introductory blog post about the rich pins, the 3 major types of pins that will be affected: product pins, recipe pins and movie pins. If you're posting pins of these things already, you certainly don't have to use rich pins. And you're probably not going to want to after you see how complicated they are to create. See all of the nitty gritty details here. Product Pins Pins will now have up-to-date pricing information at the bottom of the pin as well as information about whether or not the product is in stock. There will then be a direct link to the store where the item is available for purchase. The stupid price stripe that used to appear in the upper corner of pins is now gone. That is nice because before, you literally couldn't put a dollar amount in a pin (even if you weren't selling a product) without it looking like a product for sale due to the stupid price stripe. Recipe … [Read more...]
