spam

So you're interested in blogging huh? Or maybe you know someone who is? (Send this to them!) Well, it's not all sunshine and roses. Well, at least not if you're interested in growing your blog at all. If you're happy just smashing away at the keyboard and could not care less about people reading what you write, then go crazy! You see, you will reach a point in blogging when the things below happen, it's just part of the gig. The point here is not to frustrate you or scare you, it's to prepare you. Knowing what's ahead allows you time to have a response ready. So without further delay, here are some blogging bummers. Spam This one is just annoying. If you are on Wordpress, simply downloading and installing the plugin Akismet will help a lot. On Blogger, if you want to avoid having a stupid captcha on your site, you'll … [Read more...]

Blogging Etiquette Series ~ Leaving Comments

comment etiquette

I created the Blogging Etiquette Series to provide some clarity on the "industry standard" with regard to blogging practices. You may not agree with some of what I have to say and that's fine. The main question I want you to ask yourself is, "would I do (insert action here) in real life" and if you answer "no", you probably shouldn't do it in the blogging world either. This is not a useful or acceptable comment on any blog. We've all seen comments like this. It offers nothing constructive. It mentions no part of the content, so clearly the person didn't even read the article. Then to top it all off, they drop a link to their own site. Why the heck would anyone want to visit your site? Because of the awesome comment you left above your link? Hmm. Let's talk about the right way. How to Leave a Comment on a Website or Blog There's no one right way to do it, but there are a few things you can do to make sure your comments are constructive and appreciated by everyone. Make … [Read more...]

Running Google Adsense? You Need to Know This.

google ad placement

Here's a quick heads up if you are running Google Adsense on your blog. You cannot have your Adsense ad in a "Sponsors" section of your blog. Why? Google does not allow this because the term "sponsor" infers that you are working directly with the company that is being displayed in the ad. That is not the case. See some examples of proper placement: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notice how there are no headings above the Adsense ads? Note: this does not just mean "sponsors", you are prohibited from placing Adsense under any type of misleading heading. For example: "Resources", "My Favorite Links", "Support My Blog", etc. With Adsense ads, you are supposed to just put them there. Do NOT call action to them. They are supposed to attract natural interest, not encouraged interest. If you're running Adsense ads, you have potential to earn a nice chunk of change from … [Read more...]

How to Get More Comments on Your Blog

how to get more comments on your blog

There's no doubt in my mind that comments lead to more comments. And more comments lead to a more successful blog. When you're considering leaving a comment, do you look to see if there are already comments left? If there are no comments, are you more or less likely to leave one? Many people don't like to be the one to break the ice. That includes being the only one to comment on a blog. So, try and get a few consistent comments and that will lead to more comments. Here are a few things you can do to encourage people to leave comments on your blog. 1) Respond to EVERY comment you get. This is important. If someone is taking the time to leave you a comment, you should try and take the time to respond. I get it, this gets to be a lot once you get 30, 40, 50 comments per post, but try and get to as many as you can. This will let your readers know that you are reading their comments, which will make them more likely to leave comments on your future posts. 2) End a post … [Read more...]

Is That Your Real Name?

nametag

Having a creative, catchy blog name is important. You want your name to capture what your blog is about in a nutshell. It's your first impression and is a very important part of your blog. But it is not YOUR name. When you see other bloggers at a conference, do you want them calling you "Healthy Fit Fashionista Mama" or "Jen"? If you don't display your name anywhere on your blog, how do people know what it is? I am not saying that it's a bad thing if people associate you with your blog name, it's just that you want them to know that you have a real name as well. What are some things you can do to work your real name into your blog? It's really quite simple actually. There are a couple of places that you can and should use your real name. Doing just one of these things will give your blog a personal touch and will give you a name separate from your blog's name! • Include your name in the first sentence or two of your "About Page". (also see The Importance of an … [Read more...]
