How to Install LinkWithin for Blogger

Linkwithin is a great free tool for bloggers to use. Linkwithin will display related posts at the end of your blog posts. The great thing about this tool is that it is automatic. Linkwithin does all of the heavy lifting for you using a complex algorithm to determine which posts on your site are most related to the current post. Linked below, you will find a post where I further explain the importance of having a related posts plugin such as Linkwithin. Click here to see that post.

Well, you’ve made it past Why You Need a Related Posts Plugin and are now wanting to set one up. This post will show you how to install LinkWithin for your Blogger blog.

First up, a little message from me:

Step One:
Visit LinkWithin.com and you’ll see this box that you’ll use to get set up:

Step Two:
Use the box pictured above and enter your email and blog url. Then select your platform (Blogger) and select the width (either 3,4 or 5), which tells LinkWithin how many related posts to show. I recommend 4 or 5. There is also a box to select if you have a blog with a dark background and light text.  Like this. Ps. If you check that box, email me. We need to talk.

Step Three:
Now, don’t think you’re good to go by following the instructions that they provide on the LinkWithin site. You’ll wind up with text only links and won’t get images. Do this instead:

Click the little arrow next to “edit content” to reveal some HTML code. Highlight the entire code and copy it.

Step Four:
In your Blogger dashboard, click add a gadget.

Scroll down to find HTML/JavaScript.
html java
You’ll probably want to (and you definitely can) leave the title blank. Then simply paste the html code that you have already copied into the content box and hit the “save” button.

Step Five:
Drag the gadget right underneath the “Blog Posts” section as shown below.

That’s it! You should be good to go! People will now be reading more of your blog posts!

Note: it may take up to 4 hours to finish populating data and actually start showing images.
Note #2: if you have ad/script/plugin blockers of any kind set up, you may not be able to see them. Try a browser where you don’t have the add-ons installed to see what the plugin looks like.

Problems installing LinkWithin on Blogger: People have been having trouble installing this for Blogger. For some reason, the content box is coming up as empty and no widget can be installed. Here’s how to get around that: Instead of selecting “Blogger” on the first screen, choose “other” and enter all other information as you normally would. When you click get widget, you’ll see some code. Copy that code. Now, when you select “Blogger” and the blank content box shows up, paste the code that you copied into that box.

Hi Dash! I’m not sure why the images wouldn’t show. Maybe check your “related content” settings and make sure you have it set to show thumbnails. Also, if you wrote this right after you did it, it could take up to 4 hours to finish gathering data to show the images. I will add that note to the end of the post.

Sorry, I was speaking for a WordPress blog. For Blogger, I don’t know why the images would not be showing. Are you getting text links to show at least? Also, if you leave a link to your blog, I could take a look and try to figure it out.

Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it! I’ve found that it might be because my posts/pictures don’t have thumbnails? I’m just trying to figure out what it is and how important it is….

At this moment it doesnt even show titles which used to…

Ok another thing that could be happening is that there are not enough posts on your blog for LinkWithin to choose from. It pulls related posts based on a few different metrics and it is possible that there is nothing to show. Perhaps once you get a good handful of posts published, it will begin to pull some related posts.

This is awesome! Thank you! I started getting clicks immediately!

One bit of advice for fellow readers: if you’re running script- and/or plug-in blockers (NoScript, Ghostery, Disconnect, Collusion…) you will have to disable them to see the LinkWithin content. I run a whole raft of them and had to dig around and turn off several before it would load.

Also, as mentioned above, it took a few hours for the LinkedWithin links to start showing up.

    Unobtrusive and effective! Excellent!

    Thanks again,

Unfortunately I don’t see a way to change it once it has been installed. What you can do is delete the LinkWithin gadget that from your Blogger layout screen and start over. The whole re-install process won’t take but 5 minutes I imagine.

I used to have the link within, and then my domain switched from http://www.intoareverie.com back to a blogspot.com address. I want to remain with blogspot, so I removed my link within and any time I want to try and re-add it, it still goes back to http://www.intoareverie.com, so if you click on one of the links to an old post it goes to an unknown page! help! I’ve tried to notify linkwithin, and also waited the appropriate amount of time but nothing happened.

Ok, this one looks a bit easier. You just have to get your own Linkwithin ID by going to the site and replace that number in the code they provide. Follow the steps and you’ll be fine. Good luck! 🙂

See my problem: I have no idea where I get the code. Is it just supposed to appear in the “Edit content” box? Because mine i always empty and the code is nowhere to be found elsewhere. What am I doing wrong? Please help, the Linkwithin support won’t answer me for some unknown reason… 🙁

Instead of selecting “Blogger” on the first screen, choose “other” and enter all other information as you normally would. When you click get widget, you’ll see some code. Copy that code. Now, when you select “Blogger” and the blank content box shows up, paste the code that you copied into that box. Let me know if that worked!

I did what you said and I’m surprised it was that simple! Thank you so much!

Now I have a follow up question though… sorry to bother so much

Since these are supposed to be related posts, shouldn’t they only link to posts that have the same tags as the that post? If you understand what I mean…

For example: I want my post about nailart to link to some of my other posts with the same tag “nailart” !

Oh, I’m sorry I think it might be because I don’t have enough posts about a certain catergory so it just links to something random instead? Because on some posts it does what it’s supposed to do…

    Hello Zack,

I have been trying for about 18 months to sort out how to do related posts. I tried to install LinkWithin months ago and gave up. I sent a message to LinkWithin but never got a reply.
I managed to install nRelate instead, which was fine for a few months, until it started repeating itself. Then I got nRelate to re-index, after which it kept on coming up with the same six or seven posts.
So I decided to try LinkWithin again. Again it wouldn’t work, until….

Hooray Hooray Hooray I found the answer here!!! THANK YOU ZACK! I was having the empty code box problem, but with your help I have sorted it out in a few minutes. I can sort out old sewing machines, but with computers I need help…

    Dear Zack,
I was about to start pulling my hair out frantically when I came across your post, and I immediately sorted the problem out. Now the widget finally works! Thanks a lot!
Yet, I’ve noticed two problems: one is that some posts I erased from my blog (either recently or a long time ago) keep appearing on the LinkWithin row quite mysteriously. I’ve tried erasing the very photos from WebPicasa, but to no avail. They still show up, all the time, even if they link to an “empty” page. It’s unnerving!
The second problem is that some of the so-called “related posts” are not related at all! Many of them are not even under the same category…
Could you please let me know if you have any explanation for these hitches?
    Best,
    Miú

The deleted posts showing up is odd! Try searching for that post in your blogger dashboard and if you find them there, delete them. The related posts that it pulls are sometimes not related at all. I’t not perfect but gets it most of the time!

I’ve been trying to figure this out for ages. I’m using Blogger and I read your note below that it doesn’t work straightforward with Blogger. Now I know why and have already installed it in my blog!

    Thanks so so much!

Man, I don’t usually write comments, but right now I feel like hugging you for your help with installing LinkWithin. I got the blank box and tried several html codes found on the web, with no result. I was utterly frustrated. And then, days later, I find your page and, against all misgivings, it WORKED! Thank you so much! God bless you! 🙂

I am a complete novice to not only blogging but any type of CSS or HTML goes right over my head and in my husband’s “Honey-Do” list. I have been struggling with trying to add LinkWithin to my blog this entire week! All I got was that darn “Whoops that’s an error”. Not exactly reassuring me that I can handle reading and following directions. I have been trying to find a way to get it to work, and today I found YOU!
Genius! You helped me step-by-step and it worked! I did a “Rocky” style run around my kitchen table this morning cheering myself on! I am going to write a post this morning crediting you for helping me. I haven’t had the opportunity to look around your site further, but I will! I am a big fan now, and will be forever in your debt! Thank you!!!!!!

Hi Zack! Can you help me please with this widget set up? I am trying what you wrote, but the ‘Edit Content’ box is empty for me. Do you know why? I have uploaded and removed it at least 7 times, but still nothing,
I also copied the html you have in the image.

When I added this, not only the LinkWithin did not appear but all my other widgets were deleted (Reading List, Profile, Facebook Like/Share button). Once I removed the widget again, everything came back to normal, except there is no LinkWithin. 🙁
Any idea why this is happening?
    My blogsite is: sentimentalinberlin.blogspot.co.uk
Thank you very much in advance in any case!

Wow that is very strange… Did they initially link to your own posts, or have they only ever linked to tech365? The only thing I can think is that wires somehow got crossed during the install. I’d remove it and start again with a new installation. Let me know if that does it.

It has done both. I originally got the code through that site but when I saw this was happening I removed it and di it they way you have above but it still links to that site randomly. Weird, right?

Ya, it looks like his site ID is still in there somewhere. If you run a search while in your site’s html code and replace this: 1638185 (his site ID) with this: 2117931 (your site ID) you should be all good.

Thanks. I did have my code up but I can’t find a way to do a search to see if his is up somewhere else. I removed linkwithin all together until I can figure it out but it’s still there. So that has me thinking his code somehow ended up somewhere else in my html code. Ugh.

          • Zack lu says

            March 28, 2014 at 10:28 am

Yep, it’s in there somewhere. I see it when I view the page source in my browser. When you open your HTML code, you can find the numbers by using your web browser’s search function.
If you can’t get it, you can email me and I can look really quick.
I’m headed out for a few minutes but I can check it out a little later.

Thank you!!! I have been trying to get this to work for the past few weeks, and by following your instructions, I finally have the list of pictures appear under my posts! Oddly though, there is no text under them (only one). Is this normal? Perhaps it is something I do wrong when I post (I am very much a beginner), but if you have any feedback, I’d love to hear it.

Either way, I am so happy to have even the list of pictures show up! Thanks!

Thank you for this tip. I just followed the instructions but I don’t see any images. I guess I’ll have to wait few hours to see if it shows up. Any idea why it’s suggesting the same thing on all of my posts? Does that take time to pull as well? I have about 47 posts so far and most of them have images. Is that still on the ‘not enough’ posts side to use LinkWithin? Thanks.

Hi Zack, Firstly, thanks for all the helpful tips and tricks. I am really struggling to get Linkwithin to work on my blogger blog. In the first instance, it kept showing content that didn’t belong to me for two days. I removed it and re-installed, and now it doesn’t display any links at all. I have noticed that the html code (linkwithin site id) has been different for both issues. Have tried removing and reinstalling a number of times, but no change. Please can you help? Thanks.
