Important SEO Strategies for Bloggers at Any Level

SEO is one of the most exciting topics in the online world. Some might say it’s one of the most boring. But what if I told you that good SEO might bring hundreds, or thousands of visitors to your blog every day? Exciting, right?

There’s a lot to take in when it comes to SEO. Let’s focus on doing the best we can on each post. The graphic below is a visual of great on-page SEO. This is the term used for SEO that is done while composing a blog post.

Consider the above image a guide to how you should compose 90% of your posts. Occasionally, we have a post go up on KatieDidWhat.com that is a very personal essay written by Katie. That type of post does not work with some of these SEO practices, so we don’t do it. However, on most of them, we’re following those practices.

Now, following those practices doesn’t mean that you’re going to land in the top of Google for every post, but it will certainly help your rankings. Just one post ranking at the number one spot in Google can be optimized with affiliate links and bring in a nice, consistent revenue stream. We have posts that rank well that bring in well over $1,000 each and every month. SEO is real and should be something that you’re always trying to improve.

The graphic above contains a ton of information, but here’s some more things that you might find helpful:
– Choosing the right keywords can make all the difference in the world. I use a magical little piece of software to help me find keywords that I have a good chance of ranking for. Long Tail Pro helps me be more successful with my SEO. I plug in my keywords and it gives me quick stats on how difficult it may be to rank for that keyword. It also shows me who is currently on page 1 of Google for that keyword and shows me how difficult it would be to top them. There is a financial investment with LTP, however, the seller (Spencer) is a genuinely good guy and offers a 10-day free trial in addition to a 60-day money-back guarantee. I highly recommend checking out this little tool that can save you hours of research time and help get you more exposure. Just having one post per month get extra traffic from using this tool can cover its cost.
– Don’t make keywords the main focus of choosing a topic to write about. Stay true to yourself and your blog’s voice. Just because you find a keyword that would be easy to rank for doesn’t mean you should write about it. Many times, I just throw the idea of Google and SEO out the window and write from the heart. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. As a matter of fact, there is something wrong with NOT doing that! SEO works best for posts that are not about your life – so a “Baby Registry Must Haves” post or a “Gift Guide for New Moms” would be good posts to research some keywords on.
– Before any SEO stuff, focus on your content. By just producing great content and following the basic on-page SEO tips in the PFD linked above in this email, you should start to see your traffic from Google slowly grow.
That’s all about SEO for now. More to come later though!
One last thought is to think of SEO like going viral on a social network – except for the fact that it’s not a one or two day spike, it’s steady traffic from a single source that will last for weeks, months or even years.
