Alexa is generally known as a service that ranks websites based on traffic. Some other things are taken into consideration, but most people who care about Alexa look at it as another metric to measure a site’s traffic.
Opinions on Alexa:
A lot of people doubt Alexa’s rating system. For example, it’s easier to get a lower (lower is better when it comes to Alexa) rating if you have the toolbar installed. So that right there draws complaints from critics. In general, it is known as a very good service and one of the first things that a lot of potential sponsors and advertisers will look at when evaluating your site. Alexa should not, by any means, be the only thing you work on. It should be part of your online resumé, but should not be the only thing there. Don’t forget about great content, SEO and your social media presence.
So now that we’ve determined that Alexa does matter, what do we do about it?
First and foremost, install the Alexa toolbar. The reason being that if someone has the Alexa toolbar installed and visits your site, it will cause the ranking to lower faster. And you yourself are a user and I’m sure you’d visit your own website a lot. So that will naturally help your ranking.
Secondly, try and exchange some positive reviews for your website with other Alexa users. You’ll probably have to get reviews via exchange, since hardly anyone outside of those trying to improve their rank knows how to leave a review for a website on Alexa.
Third, get readers to stay on your site! Beef up your content, install a related posts plugin and link to other posts within posts. Just make an effort to keep them on your site. The longer they stay and more pages/posts they visit, the more that will help your ranking.
Fourth, increase your traffic. Check out my Get Readers section for posts on increasing traffic.
Lastly, wait. Your Alexa won’t nosedive down no matter what you do. It will slowly drop and drop and drop if you’re doing all of the things above. The progress will obviously slow down as it drops.
Doing these 5 things should take you pretty far in improving the Alexa ranking for your website.

Great tips. Installing the toolbar definitely does lower your ranking – after I installed the alexa toolbar my ranks went higher for a week or so but then began to get lower quite fast after that. I was freaking out for that first week though ha ha.

Yea, it happens very fast for a while after installation! It’s a bummer when the party ends and it eventually flattens out though.
